What's on 2019

These are the public events and activities run by the Thanet Coast Project.

The Thanet Coast Project run these public events with the help of volunteers - mainly Coastal Wardens/Guardians.  There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to help on the coast - see 'Coastal Wardens', Beach Cleans & 'Coastbusters'.  

Some activities are part of the new 'Guardians of the Deep' project with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help increase awareness raising and engagement, particularly with schools.

Big Seaweed Search - Thanet Coast

Opportunity to join in with a 'citizen science' project designed by the Natural History Museum led by Laura Welton, Guardians of the Deep Project Officer. No prior knowledge needed as we will be looking for a selected set of seaweeds, that are used to indicate sea temperature rise, spread of non-native species and ocean acidification. By walking a stretch of coast we will record the abundance of a set number of seaweeds. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. Identification sheets provided. Event lasts 1.5 hours. Free - with thanks to Guardians of the Deep project.

Making a Buzz for the Coast:

A chance to hear about work to conserve rare bumblebees in Thanet

  • Thursday, 21 March, 7.00pm (2hrs)

Meet Lauren Kennedy & Bex Cartwright from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust's local team to hear about the work to conserve rare bumblebees in Thanet.  The Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT) has teamed up with the Thanet Coast Project, Thanet Council and other partners to enhance the area's bumblebee populations in and around Thanet as part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project in Kent. Come along & find out about progress on the two local chalk grassland sites & about opportunities to get involved.

Coastal Warden/Guardian - Introductory Training 2019

This is the introductory course for new volunteers that would like to help as Coastal Wardens/Guardians on the North East Kent coast, which includes the NE Kent MPA.

Volunteers adopt a local bay or stretch of coastline and help look after local marine and bird life in your patch. We will take you through the history of the North East Kent Marine Protected Area (NEKMPA) and the management scheme, your role as a coastal warden/guardian and how you can help. 

  • Sat. 6 April (3.5hrs) - Whitstable
  • Tue. 22 October (3.5hrs) - Margate
Booking only:  All new volunteers will need to complete an online registration form  (2019)   (if having trouble please down load & complete:  ‘Volunteer Registration Form’ first and send in to us).  We will send you an invite to book on the next training session nearer the time.

 

Beach Cleans - Pegwell Bay, Cliffsend

Quarterly beach clean (Beachwatch, MCS) as part of the Guardians of the Deep project within the Sandwich & Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve below the Hugin Viking Ship picnic site, near the chalk cliffs (just north of the former hoverpad).  All equipment is provided. Please dress appropriately for the activity and weather conditions on the day. Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  No need to book, just turn up on the day.

Great Eggcase & Scavenger Hunt + with beach art!

Join the scavenger hunt looking for clues of our marine life along the shorel, and looking out for shark and ray egg cases, on this activity that includes sand/beach art at the end!   

Please note: You will need to wear suitable footwear and clothing for the beach, sand art and the weather conditions on the day. All equipment is provided by the Thanet Coast Project. These events are suitable for families and especially children aged 4-11, Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout. This event is free, but we welcome a donation (eg £1 per adult & child present!) The events lasts 1.5 hours.

Seaweed and their Secrets – Walk & Talk

A great opportunity to find out all that you ever want to know about seaweed! This walk & talk is led by seaweed expert Ian Tittley, formerly Natural History Museum, Kent Field Club & Kent Wildlife Trust.   

The Thanet Coast’s chalk reef provides the perfect substrate for different algae communities within the designated Marine Protected Area. Come along for this walk through rockpools and along the shore to discover seaweed, their uses and properties on this outdoor talk.  Please note advice on booking.    These walks are suitable for people of 14 and above, and last for 2 hours.

'Cliffs, Caves, Citizen Science & Castles!'

  • Sat. 8 June, 9:30am - Botany Bay, Broadstairs (CT10 3SD)

A 'World Ocean Day' walk & talk that takes you around the stunning Kingsgate coastline from Botany Bay to Kingsgate Bay, Broadstairs.

The talk takes in the cliffs, caves and castles on a stroll along the beach and chalk reef within the ‘North East Kent Marine Protected Area’ (NEKMPA).  There will be a chance to hear about citizen science project work on route - such as ‘Shoresearch’ recording of marine life. 

Please wear suitable footwear for walking on rocks, rockpools and along the beach. This walk is suitable for people of 14 years and above. Under 18s will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. The walk will last for 2 hours and is relatvely short (2km in total). It will cover a difficult walking terrain as on the rocky shore. Donations welcome (suggested donation £3pp).

Other opportunities and events around the coast include:  

Coastal Wardens/Guardians / Volunteering

Local people can get actively involved with looking after their own chosen stretch of coastline by enrolling as a NEKMPA Coastal Warden with activities and training opportunities throughout the year.    In addition, you can volunteer to join the 'Coastbusters' (non-native species control teams - currently targeting Pacific Oysters) around NE Kent - just send us a email if you would like to get involved or with 'Making a Buzz for the Coast' - with task days

Beach Cleans for Community Groups

Community groups can organise their own beach cleans, or join in with ones that are currently organised by local groups.  Find out more or join our Great British Beach Clean event above! 

School Excursions 

Schools, clubs or large group excursions can view the variety of marine and coastal wildlife around the Thanet coastline depending upon the tide being in or out; and see evidence of coastal erosion, run beach inspired activities, or just visit for general coastal leisure opportunities.  More information  (who to notify, bay facilities and online resources)
